(Kempen) PORTICA was founded in 1971 as a fulfillment service for advertising materials. There were ten employees in the beginning. Today, 170 employees of the company in Kempen (NRW) provide comprehensive process support for advertising material logistics, e-commerce, sales promotion and business process outsourcing.
The first jobs of this sort were performed at the end of the 1960s by the printing company te Neues. At that time, there were very professional suppliers for designing and producing advertising materials, but the weak point in the supply chain was distributing these materials to the right addresses, such as those of dealers for a manufacturer. Those placing orders for advertising materials had no one to handle the many tasks that follow the production of the materials. There was clearly an unfilled need on the market. Through a fortunate coincidence, the printing plant came into contact with the American company R. L. Polk in Detroit, which had established some expertise in this area. It was an obvious step from there to found PORTICA together.
The first building for PORTICA was erected on Von-Galen-Strasse in Kempen in 1971. A large volume customer (and the only one) at the time was Adam Opel AG. The initial area of business comprised small circulars, which grew steadily. The following years saw an increase in the customer base and jobs. From the beginning, PORTICA used software programs provided by the printing plant's IT department to control the various processes. This later led to the establishment of the independent company GEDAK GmbH.
By the start of the 1980s, PORTICA had secured its place on the market in three areas of business: advertising materials logistics, sales promotion and various IT services, with the underlying philosophy that there is a solution tailored to fit every customer - each has its own, unique PORTICA.
The 1980s saw the addition of a fourth area: mail-order service, later known as "e-commerce". The initial customer for this was the Cologne office of Worldwide Brands Inc. (WBI) with its Camel Shop. This also represented PORTICA's first direct service to consumers.
Today the company is a service provider with customers of different sizes in various sectors. Small specialized agencies receive the same top-level service as brand manufacturers, big service providers and international enterprises. Proper shipping of packages continues to be important, but today customers expect more than anything that a service provider be able to produce comprehensive reports quickly and reliably, operate web shops for orders, continually improve the management of processes and handle consumer support when required. Here too there is a reliance on standard IT systems which can be configured individually for each customer, following the proven approach for past success: each customer has its own, unique PORTICA.
